WHAT I WISH EVERY WOMAN KNEW BEFORE BOOKING A BOUDOIR SESSION

Booking a boudoir session can feel exciting… and also a little nerve-wracking. If you’re thinking about doing one, chances are you’ve already had a dozen thoughts like:

“Is this weird?”
“Am I brave enough?”
“Do I look like someone who does boudoir?”

If I could sit down with every woman before her session, here are the things I’d gently tell her. No judgment, no pressure—just honesty.

It’s Okay to Admit This Is Kind of a Weird Thing to Do

Let’s start here: boudoir is a little weird. You’re getting undressed in front of someone you may have just met, posing your body in ways you probably don’t do in daily life, and trusting that the end result.

That weirdness just means you’re doing something vulnerable and new. You actually don’t have to feel fearless, confident, or “ready.” You just have to show up. Nerves are normal. Awkward moments happen. We laugh. We adjust. And then something really fun and beautiful unfolds.

Take Time to Make Sure We’re a Good Fit

Not every boudoir photographer is right for every person, and that’s ok!

Before you book, I’d always encourage you to spend time on my website. Do you like my style?

Boudoir is deeply personal. Feeling comfortable with your photographer and their approach matters just as much as loving the photos themselves!

Think About Your Location!

Location plays a huge role in how your session feels and looks.

Most of my sessions take place in my home studio near downtown Saint Louis, which is designed to be cozy, private, and relaxed. That works beautifully for many people, but it’s not the only option.

Some clients choose a hotel suite for a luxury vibe, an Airbnb with a specific aesthetic, or even a private outdoor location for something natural and free-spirited.

There’s no “best” choice, just the one that feels most you!

Plan Your Outfits (Instead of Bringing Everything You Own)

This is one of the most important tips!

Rather than bringing a suitcase full of random, mismatched pieces, take time to plan intentional outfits from head to toe.

Scrub Your Feet and Remove Clothing Tags

This might sound small, but it makes a difference. Scrub the bottoms of your feet, trim or clean up toenails if you’d like, and remove all clothing tags ahead of time. These little details are easy to overlook but can be distracting in photos, especially when you’re barefoot.

Makeup Is Optional, but it Looks Softer on Camera Than You Think

You never have to wear makeup for boudoir. Truly. If you love a natural look, that’s beautiful. If you enjoy glam, that’s beautiful too.

But, one thing I always like clients to know is that makeup photographs softer than it looks in real life. What feels like “a lot” in the mirror often reads as very balanced on camera. If you love makeup, go all out!

Spray Tans Are Optional and Quality Matters

A spray tan is not necessary for a great boudoir session. If you do choose to get one, invest in a high-quality, professional spray tan.

Even the best ones tend to show around wrists, hands, and feet, so keep that in mind. Subtle and natural photographs best.

Don’t Bring a Friend, But If You Do, Choose Carefully

I recommend coming to your boudoir session alone. It allows you to stay present, relaxed, and fully focused on yourself.

If you do bring a guest, make sure they are a true hype woman who builds you up, celebrates you, and knows when to stay quiet and supportive. Boudoir is not the place for comparison, second-guessing, or outside self-consciousness. Your session should feel empowering, not shadowed by doubt.

Some friends improve the session, others totally make it awkward. I trust you to know your friends!

You Don’t Need a Partner to “Deserve” Boudoir

You do not need a romantic partner to gift these photos to. You do not need a special occasion. You do not need permission.

Boudoir can be a gift, but it can also be a reminder or a reclamation. A moment where you choose yourself! Many women book sessions simply because they want to see themselves differently, more kindly, or more honestly. That is more than enough reason.

Bring Snacks, Water, and Headache Medicine

Especially if you’re having professional hair and makeup done, your session can be several hours long. Bring snacks, water, and headache medicine if you’re prone to headaches.

Studio lights and camera flashes are bright, and taking care of your body helps you feel your best throughout the session.

Come Fed, Hydrated, and Kind to Yourself

Eat beforehand. Drink water. Get rest.

Boudoir sessions involve movement, posing, and emotional energy. Taking care of your body beforehand helps you feel more grounded and present during your session.

And most importantly: be gentle with yourself! You don’t need to “fix” anything before you arrive.

You Can Do It!

You don’t need a certain body, personality, or level of confidence to book a boudoir session. You just need curiosity and a willingness to show up as you are.

If you’re considering boudoir photography in Saint Louis, my goal is always to create a space where you feel safe, supported, and seen. I’ll be holding your hand through it all!
